Do I need a visa to travel to Guyana?
Visas are typically necessary to enter Guyana. There are, however, a few exemptions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Guyana lists the countries whose nationals do not require visas to enter Guyana.
So, I need a visa! What do I do?
The visa application form is available at Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Guyana. Applicants are encouraged to apply three (3) weeks to (1) one month in advance of travel. The process period is one (1) week however this varies depending upon the nature of the case. A letter notifying the applicant of the visa being granted will be sent to their address provided in the application. Visitors must have in their possession the original/ or copy of the document stating the visa has been granted to show to Immigration upon arrival at Cheddi Jagan International Airport -Timehri. Payment for the visa might be made to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Guyana or upon arrival at Cheddi Jagan International Airport – Timehri.
What are the other entry requirements for travel to Guyana?
All visitors to Guyana are required to have a valid passport to enter and depart Guyana.
All visitors to Guyana should ensure that their passports have at least six months of remaining validity. Those arriving by air require an onward plane ticket.
Can I use credit cards/ATM cards in Guyana?
Yes. Most hotels, restaurants, stores and shops use them. We utilize cards from Bank of Nova Scotia and Republic Bank. If you have an international VISA debit/ credit card, those are commonly accepted too. Mastercard services are available but are lesser accessible.
What is the climate like?
Guyana is warm and tropical throughout the year. December to January and May to June are the rainy seasons
Should I bring sun-screen?
It is advisable, yes. Pack a fashionable (and/or functional) pair of sunshades too.
Are there lots of mosquitoes?
Not a lot in the city. Malaria and other mosquito-borne illnesses are not problematic in the city.
Are there any vaccinations that I need to get before travelling to Guyana?
You should be immunized for yellow fever.
